Prue’s story- Central Park Plunge 2018
Hello, my name is Prue, I am 25 years old, I live in a group home with 2 other people and we have fulltime carers. I have been living in my house for 3 years. I moved here because it was too difficult for me to live at home with my parents. I have ADHD and a learning disability. I am very independent and like doing things for myself but socially I can be very shy until I get to know people. I like to be active and experiencing new activities all the time, especially with my friends.
I have been attending Cahoots since I was 5 years old. I have made lots of great friends over the years that I have been attending Cahoots camps. I also like attending Cahoots because we get to do lots of fun activities that I wouldn’t normally get a chance to do. Over the past three months I have been to Albany and Geraldton which I’ve never been to before.
“I love Cahoots because it gives me a chance to get out and make new friends that are similar to me.”
My favourite programs are the weeklong camps as I get to have a real holiday away from home, it makes me feel relaxed and I get to spend more time with my friends that also attend. My all-time favourite moment with Cahoots was going to Albany to celebrate my Birthday because I was able to celebrate it with my friends. My funding does not cover my camps, so I must pay this myself and choose carefully which camps I can go on. Cahoots help me set up a payment plan so that I pay off my camps fortnightly.
Cahoots and their fundraiser team raising funds to help Prue attend camps will help Prue significantly. She will be able to attend more camps without the worry of having to make a payment plan which affects her everyday budgeting. Prue’s income is very limited, and her budget is very tight.
Attending Cahoots camps gives Prue an outlook beyond her everyday life. She is able to experience things that other people her age get to experience but often take for granted. Being able to spend time with her peers and have new adventures help Prue to grow and experience life as she should. It is a much-needed break for her and she always returns with stories to tell a beautiful smile and wonderfully exhausted.
“I appreciate all the support that my team are giving me because I love attending Cahoots. It is my home away from home and I always have the best time and I get to have a break away from my housemates which is important to me. I really like all the leaders on camp they encourage me, challenge me, help me to be more open, have fun and be the best person I can be.”
