Slip, Slop, Slap
Summer in Australia is all about fun in the sun, but did you know that two out of three Australians will face a skin cancer diagnosis in their lifetime? At Cahoots, we’re passionate about keeping you safe while you soak up those beautiful summer memories.
Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common skin cancer in Australia, but with the right protection, you can significantly reduce your risk. At Cahoots, we want to refresh your memory on how to be safe this summer in the sun!
The Five Steps
1. Slip on Protective Clothing
Your first line of defence is what you wear. Look for clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) that covers as much skin as possible. Long-sleeved, collared shirts aren’t just a fashion statement – they’re your personal sun shield against the harsh Australian heat.
2. Slop on Sunscreen
Sunscreen is your secret weapon. Reach for a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF50 or SPF50+ sunscreen. Pro tip: Apply it 20 minutes before heading outside and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or excessive sweating.
Here’s little-known fact: The average adult needs about 35mL of sunscreen – that’s roughly a teaspoon for your head and neck, each limb, and the front and back of your body.
3. Slap on a Hat
Not all hats are created equal. Choose a broad-brimmed, legionnaire, or bucket hat that provides comprehensive shade for your face, neck, and ears.
4. Seek Shade
Shade is your friend, but don’t get too comfortable. While trees and sun structures reduce UV radiation, reflection can still be a sneaky culprit. Always combine shade with other protection methods.
5. Slide on
Complete your sun protection outfit with close-fitting, wraparound sunglasses. Combined with a wide-brimmed hat, these can block up to 98% of UV radiation to your eyes.
Your skin tells a story. Regularly check for any new or changing moles. If you notice anything usual – size changes, colour variations, or anything that seems off- consult a professional immediately.
Remember, sun protection isn’t just avoiding a sunburn. It’s about long-term health and enjoying the incredible Australian lifestyle safely.
Stay smart, stay protected and enjoy this summer with Cahoots!
